The list

Seven places the money hides.

1

Equipment you bought this year

Tables, lasers, decompression units, software, even the new front desk. Section 179 may let you write off the full cost the year you buy it instead of spreading it over years.

Ask: Did we expense it or depreciate it?

2

Continuing education, licensing and travel

Seminars, board fees, association dues, the flight and the hotel. If it keeps you licensed or makes you better at what you do, it may qualify. Most of it never gets tracked.

Ask: Is every CE receipt in the books?

3

A retirement plan built for an owner

A basic IRA caps you fast. The right plan design for a practice owner may let you set aside far more, pre-tax, while still covering your team the way the rules require.

Ask: Is my plan built for me or for a W-2 employee?

4

Health premiums and an HSA

Self-employed health insurance premiums may be deductible above the line. Pair the right plan with an HSA and you may get a deduction going in, tax-free growth, and tax-free money coming out.

Ask: Where are my premiums showing up on the return?

5

Renting your home to your practice

The Augusta rule may let your business rent your home for up to 14 days a year for meetings or training. The practice deducts it. You may not have to report it as income.

Ask: Do we have a rental agreement and minutes?

6

Your kids on payroll

Real work, real wages, real records. Paying your children for legitimate work in the practice may shift income into a lower bracket and fund their Roth IRA at the same time.

Ask: Is there a job description and a timesheet?

7
Most overlooked

A credit for improving how you treat

If you have tested new protocols, adjusted techniques, or changed how you deliver care to get better outcomes, that work may qualify for a federal credit most chiropractors have never been told about. This is the one we find most often.

Ask: Has anyone ever looked?
